Cinderella’s Castle, is the most photographed attraction in Walt Disney World. It’s the center and focal point of the Magic Kingdom with all of the other lands spread around the Castle.

However, most guests just stop to take pictures and don’t take the time to fully appreciate this attraction. Remember the Imagineers attention to detail didn’t stop for at quick appearance of the Castle, but infused it all around it and through it.

Some say that Cinderella’s Castle was designed after Versailles, Fontainebleau, or the châteaux of Chaumont, Pierrefonds, Chambord and Chenonceau.

But the comparison is closer to Neuschwanstein, King Ludwig’s Fairytale Castle in Bavaria.
The chief designer of the castle, Herbert Ryman, also referenced the original design for the castle in the film Cinderella.

(Note
: Most of the French Chateaus and Castles can be seen in the ‘Reflections of France’ film shown at the French Pavilion in Epcot.)

Architecture / Construction

Over the years, Cinderella’s Castle seen many changes, from being transformed to a large, pink, candy trimmed cake during the 25th Anniversary, to the more ornate gold-trimmed facade during the Happiest Celebration on Earth.

Cinderella Castle was completed in July 1971, after about 18 months of construction. It is 189 feet tall measured from the concrete bottom of the water - filled moat. It is 100 feet taller than the Sleeping Beauty Castle in California. The Cinderella’s Castle may look like the real thing, but it is actually made out of steel beams, plaster, concrete and fiberglass, not bricks. It can easily withstand the 125 mph (175 km/h) hurricane wind speeds required in Central Florida and with a great deal of strength in reserve.
Picture
There are 27 towers on the castle, numbered 1-29. (Tower numbers 13 and 17 were deleted before construction since they could not easily be seen from anywhere in the park, mainly due to obstruction by other Fantasyland buildings.)

The tower with the clock in front is number 10, the tallest is number 20, and number 23 is the other golden-roofed tower. For the better part of 2015, Disney has added an additional 4 turrets to Cinderella Castle extending the lovely panorama!

Tops of some spires are painted gold. Spires of Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle are actually gold leaf.

And, there are 13 gargoyles on the outside of the castle, you can see some of them around the tallest tower.

Picture
Cinderella Castle was designed so that it was tall enough that it could be seen from the Seven Seas Lagoon in front of the Magic Kingdom, where many guests took ferries from the parking lot to the gates of the park.

Castle Exterior and Surrounding Area

Adding to the enchanted environment, the castle is surrounded by a tranquil moat, lush green grass, rose bushes and a wishing well, providing perfect picture-taking opportunities from nearly every angle.

In the back courtyard area, you'll find a fountain with a bronze statue of Cinderella and her mouse and bird friends. Make a wish! The rose gardens in front of the Castle are a great spot to relax and simply absorb the magic that's around. (The Rose Garden has been replaced by the new expanded Plaza Gardens).

Most guests aren't aware that the Disney Family has a Crest and Coat of Arms. On the Fantasyland entrance to the Castle you'll see the Disney family Crest and Coat of arms displayed.

The Castle Garden Plaza

Picture
Recently the plaza has been expanded to include gorgeous new grassy and garden areas near Cinderella Castle.

Two new Plaza Gardens can be enjoyed by guests. East and west areas were added to a new larger central hub area.
The intention is to provide bigger walkways to ease congestion, beautiful lawns for relaxation and a new dedicated FastPass+ viewing area for the fireworks show Wishes at night.

New fountains and lighting add that extra touch to the area.

The FastPass+ area is open to everyone during the day, but in the evening it will be used for FP+ holders only.

Partners Statue

Picture
Picture
The "Partners" sculpture was created by Disney Legend Blaine Gibson.  Blaine is most well-known for creating all of the Presidents (prior to President Obama) for the Hall of Presidents attraction. Blaine helped create characters ranging from the Pirates of the Caribbean to his later works with the figures for the American Adventure in Epcot. He retired after a long career at Disney in 1983, but was occasionally given special projects to work on afterward.

Marty Sklar approached Blaine about creating the statue of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse for Disneyland.  Blaine was in his mid-seventies at the time, but still was willing to take on the task.  The finished product was placed in Disneyland on November 18, 1993 exactly 65 years after the launch of "Steamboat Willie."  Additional copies of "Partners" were ultimately placed in each of the Disney Theme Parks around the world, with the Disney World version arriving in 1995.

Picture
Picture
"Partners" Inspires

There are many stories about what the pose of Walt and Mickey means.  According to "The Imagineering Field Guide to the Magic Kingdom":  Walt is rendered as the visionary pointing toward the future and leading the way for his creation, Mickey Mouse.

Disney Urban legend states that Walt is pointing Mickey towards the statue of his brother Roy at the front of the Magic Kingdom as a sign of handing things over to him.  The sentiment is nice, but the statue of Roy almost created by Blaine (see Chapter 5 – Magic Kingdom – Town Square East and Park), didn't arrive until 1999.

At the base of the statue is a quotation from Walt Disney:  "We believe in our idea: a family park where parents and children could have fun - together."  This one sentiment may have guided the development of the Disney Parks more than any other.

Picture
Picture
Regardless of origin or true meaning of the pose, the "Partners" sculpture plays an important role in Disney World's Magic Kingdom.  It places Walt front and center as part of the "show" in the hub of the Magic Kingdom.

Morning Welcome Show - “Let the Magic Begin”

In Jan 2017, Magic Kingdom Welcome show was moved from the Train Station in the front of the park to the stage in front of Cinderella’s Castle.
Just prior to park opening, the sound of a trumpet fanfare will burst through the morning air, signaling the arrival of a very important procession, a.k.a. the Royal Herald.

Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire
In the summer of 2016, Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire show started performing several times a day.
It replace Dream along with Mickey.
The cast includes Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy, with appearances by Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Rapunzel, Tiana, and others.
The storyline for the show has Mickey and his “troupe of Merry Makers” getting ready for a festival and traveling to invite friends from other lands to join their celebration. From the Land of the Bewitching Bayous, Goofy has invited Tiana, Naveen and Louis to add a little spice of New Orleans jazz to the party.

From the Land of the Enchanted Woods, Donald Duck brings some new friends he met at the Snuggly Duckling, and Daisy introduces us to her special guests, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider.

Finally, Mickey shares a surprise with Minnie, as he has traveled to the Land of the Mystic Mountains to invite Olaf, Anna and Elsa, who contributes a blast of her icy magic. It all culminates in a grand dance, as the Merry Makers invite all their special guests to join in the fun on this special day in Magic Kingdom Park!"

Picture
Dream Along with Mickey
This show debuted as part of the Year of Million Dreams Campaign in 2006. The storyline is a dream inspired show touches on "Happily Ever After" as well as dreams of exciting adventures. This show actually focuses on Donald. The Disney characters join in to helping Donald realize his dreams. Minnie, Peter Pan and Sleeping Beauty are among the talented performers.
The villain Sleeping Beauty's Maleficent is intent on turning Donald's dreams into nightmares. As with every great Disney tale, good conquers evil and the result is a fun, character filled finale.
This show ended April 2, 2016.

Other Shows around the Castle

Storytime with Belle

Several times throughout the day, Belle (from Beauty and the Beast) arrived in the Fairy Tale Garden to read a story to the children and mingle with them afterwards. The venue was quite small, lending to the intimate setting. During the holiday season, it became "Belle's Enchanted Christmas."

This ended September 12, 2010 and the area is now used for Character Meet & Greet. (Check the Times Guide for listing of who and when)

With the New Fantasyland expansion a new attraction ‘Enchanted Tales with Belle’ was added. It’s an interactive story adventure featuring Belle, and other character from Beauty and the Beast.

Sword in the Stone
This was an entertaining show where Merlin chose a child to pull the sword out of the stone. (That thing didn't budge otherwise.) It took place in front of the Carousel and was a nice little diversion to watch. The lucky child chosen would always have the power to pull the sword out and a special celebration followed. The new "ruler of the realm" would be outfitted with a robe and crown and presented with a keepsake medallion and certificate.

Final sword ceremony took place on August 15, 2006.
But has recently been reintroduced, however without Merlin.

Swan Boats
Between May 1973 and August 1983, the Swan Boats were a popular attraction at Magic Kingdom. One of the loveliest attractions inside the Magic Kingdom piloted the waterways around the park once upon a time. Swan Boats traveled the waters around Cinderella Castle taking guests on a leisurely tour of the waters of the Magic Kingdom, offering unique views of Cinderella Castle, The Swiss Family Robinson Tree House and other attractions along the waterways.
Picture
Picture
The Swan Boats originally docked near the Plaza Restaurant, in what has become an outdoor seating area along edge of the canal. Once the permanent dock was built, the roofed pavilion that could be reached by walking through the Plaza Rose Garden, the original dock was repurposed.

Skipper Canteen

Every shelf, cabinet, and bulletin board in the Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen is filled with nods to stories and attractions from throughout Walt Disney World’s history. The Swan Boats are mentioned not once, but twice, inside of the Skipper Canteen.

The first reference can be found upon the bookshelves between the crew mess hall and the secret meeting room of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (S.E.A.). Here a volume is entitled The Grace of a Swan, and while the Swan Boats were graceful to look at, they surely did not live up to this description in the movements.

The second mention can be found on the bulletin board, a small classified advertisement has been placed to sell a single boat. Described as all white with a swan carved on the bow, those interested are directed to Merry Time Traders for more details.

Guests could board one of the twelve boats named after popular Disney heroines.

By the end of the rides operation, there were only 5 boats operating. Powered by natural gas, these boats were free floating (no track) and used a unique water jet system to steer them in any direction.
The reason for closing was because of the cost to keep the boats running. They constantly had issues with their natural gas engines and guidance system. Originally the guidance was done with an electronic system but was changed to use water propulsion to turn the boat. Eventually the boats were removed and sold.

Cinderella's Castle - Interior

Mosaic Murals

As we’ve point out while touring Main St, the Imagineer’s are always looking for way to entertain the senses. There is magic in sight through Color and the Imagineers use this magic throughout Walt Disney World. An area that dazzle and delights guests with the magic of color is in the interior of the Castle, the walkway from Main St to Fantasyland. This walkway has 5 mosaic murals that depict Cinderella’s story. Over five hundred different colors can be found in these mosaics. Special use of color can be found in the fourth mural, in which the prince slips the glass slipper onto Cinderella’s foot. Her Step-sisters stand by in bitter, wide eyed amazement: Anastasia’s face has a reddish hue, symbolizing her anger at what is transpiring, while Drizella’ face is green with envy. This is an effective way of using Color to emphasize the storytelling.

The series was designed by Imagineer Dorothea Redmond and set by a team of six artists led by mosaicist Hanns-Joachim Scharff. Each panel is a 15 feet by 10 feet shaped Gothic arch. Skilled artists took 22 months to complete the murals using over 300,000 pieces of Italian glass in more than 500 colors. The tiles are hand-cut and many are fused with sterling silver and 14k gold. Some tiles are as small as the head of a tack!

Most guests quickly race through this area on their way to Fantasyland and never gave these murals even a passing glance. But we’ll take the time here to look at these beautiful masterpieces.
Picture

The next mural is above the door is shows Cinderella's fairy godmother transforming her rag-dress into a beautiful gown. Her pumpkin coach can be seen in the background. Note that some of the characters in the murals resemble their movie counterpart, but the fairy godmother doesn’t.

Picture
The fourth mural shows us that fateful moment when Cinderella tries on the slipper. As stated above note the stepsister's faces in this scene. There's always details to uncover. Anastasia is colored red to signify anger and Drizella is green with envy. The footman's face is that of Herb Ryman and the gentleman behind him bears the countenance of John Hench. Both men started their Disney careers as animators and went on to have significant input in the building of the New York World's Fair, Disneyland, and Walt Disney World.

Note:
  • Hanns-Joachim Scharff headed the artisan team, which included his daughter-in-law Monika Scharff, which brought Dorothea Redmond’s watercolor designs for the Cinderella Castle mosaic murals to life. Scharff and Scharff, as they were now known, would go on to craft lush mosaics including the twin mosaic murals at Epcot’s Land pavilion.
  •  Herbert Ryman was a Disney Imagineer, who worked in watercolor, oils, and pen & ink sketches. In 1953 Ryman drew the first illustrations of Walt Disney's vision of a theme park that eventually became Disneyland. Herbert Ryman was art director for many Disney feature-length animated films such as Fantasia and Dumbo.
  • John Hench was an artist, designer and director at The Walt Disney Company. For 65 years, he helped design and develop various Disney attractions and theme parks.

History of Cinderella's Royal Table

King Stefan’s Banquet Hall (1971-1997)

The restaurant that is today known as Cinderella’s Royal Table opened with the rest of the Magic Kingdom on October 1, 1971 as “King Stefan’s Banquet Hall”. When naming the dining establishment, Imagineers wanted a name that would suit the regal atmosphere that was being created. Due to the fact that Cinderella’s father is not mentioned in the film, Imagineers used some creative licensing and named the restaurant after Sleeping Beauty’s father King Stefan. This was done despite the fact that the eatery was housed inside Cinderella Castle. The only real major change to occur in King Stefan’s Banquet Hall came in 1996 when the restaurant began offering a character breakfast which allowed guests to meet various princesses while they ate.

Background Story The background story to King Stefan’s Banquet Hall could be found on the front of the restaurant’s menu. See below to read it!

Cinderella’s Royal Table (1997-Present)

On April 28, 1997 Disney changed the name of King Stefan’s Banquet Hall to Cinderella’s Royal Table. In 2005, Cinderella’s Royal Table became a “character lunch” location. Like the Once Upon a Time Breakfast, guests could now meet their favorite princesses during lunch.  Beginning on February 1, 2006 dinner at Cinderella’s Royal Table became “fixed-price, set meat”. At this time the Fairy Godmother also began appearing at dinner time. As a part of the new dinner format, guests were also given an exclusive lithograph for no additional charge On January 1, 2007 however, guests no longer received a lithograph when dining at Cinderella's Royal Table. Instead children ages 3 to 9 were given a Princess Wand for girls and a Prince Sword for boys.

Dream Suite

One of the upper floors holds the Cinderella Suite. The suite was originally built as an apartment for Walt Disney (he had a similar one in Disneyland above the fire station), but he died before the Magic Kingdom opened in 1971.  After that, the suite was used for the resort's phone operators, but they moved out once they outgrew the space.  It was then remodeled for the "Year of a Million Dreams" promotion in 2006, when an overnight stay here was one of the most sought-after prizes Disney offered. It is still used for VIPs or special giveaways.

Picture
A parlor sofa that invites kicking off the shoes and curling up to read a chapter beneath the richly detailed vaulted ceiling of the salon and familiar castle-gray stone walls, rich hardwood paneling with ornate stained-glass windows.

In the foyer of the suite, guests will discover a design of the fairytale pumpkin coach in the marble floor inlay. A memorable artifact from the story, the famous glass slipper, adorns a cove.
The bathroom houses a huge garden tub with ornate stained glass windows and a twinkling star ceiling.

So how do you make a reservation for the Cinderella’s Dream Suite? Unfortunately you can’t. Disney occasionally gives a night stay as a prize, but this is rare.

The suite was completely redecoration as a 'royal bedchamber', which can sleep up to six people. The inspiration for the design of the Cinderella Suite were the 17th century French chateaus upon which the Castle was modeled. The Suite has ornate furnishings in dark woods with opulent fabrics. Certainly fit for a Disney Princess.

However, all is not what it seems as the portrait magically transforms into a flat screen television. Evening Entertainment at the Castle

Cinderella Castle serves as a spectacular backdrop and focal point for the Projection Light Show and Fireworks extravaganzas that occur in Magic Kingdom Park on select nights. Over 16 million colored lights illuminate the castle when the sun sets; and during fireworks shows, lights and music effortlessly come together to create an even more magical setting and great ending to a magical day at Walt Disney World.

Once Upon a Time - Castle Projection Show
In November 2016, Once Upon a Time Projection Show replacing the previous projection mapping show on Cinderella Castle, Celebrate the Magic.
The show is hosted by Mrs. Potts, as she is telling bedtime stories to Chip, including sequences showcasing Alice in Wonderland, Tangled, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and finally Beauty and the Beast which culminates in the battle between Gaston and Beast fighting out on the castle itself and Beast's transformation back into the Prince kicking off the finale. The finale montage includes brief appearances by characters from Frozen, Aladdin and The Lion King.
This show runs approximately 14 minutes. Check the Times Guide for time and dates.

Celebrate the Magic
Picture

Celebrate the Magic show was replaced by the Once Upon a Time Projection Show.

Celebrate the Magic was a nighttime show at the Magic Kingdom park of Walt Disney World, that premiered on November 13, 2012. It replaced the Magic, the Memories which ran at the Magic Kingdom from January 2011 to September 4, 2012.

Tinker Bell introduces the show as she appears flying over the castle's turrets. The castle is transformed into a paper canvas as Walt Disney appears sketching Mickey Mouse in his iconic Steamboat Willie appearance. Tinkerbell enchants a paintbrush, which then becomes the host of the show. A kaleidoscope featuring images of Mickey, Donald Duck and Goofy are projected followed soon after by short clips from Cinderella, Pinocchio and The Princess and the Frog. The show then progresses into longer, classic scenes from Disney films, including; Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo, Wreck-it Ralph, The Lion King, Tarzan, The Jungle Book, Lady and the Tramp, Tangled, Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean and Frozen. The show's climax features a fast-paced montage of characters and scenes from such other Disney films as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, Sleeping Beauty, Pocahontas, Up, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Tangled. During the montage Walt Disney appears again, via archival footage, reciting one of his most famous quotes; "I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse". The show then proceeds into a synchronized pyrotechnic finale.

Wishes

Wishes: A Magical Gathering of Disney Dreams
was a fireworks show at the Magic Kingdom theme park of Walt Disney World. The show debuted at the park on October 9, 2003. The show was hosted by Jiminy Cricket and the Blue Fairy, and revolved around the wishes of famous Disney characters - good and bad. The lights on Cinderella Castle changed colors throughout the show, reflecting the different stages of Wishes' narrative. During different parts of the show, a "wishing star" firework was shot, cresting approximately 100 feet above the castle’s bright spires. While most of the characters in the show are only heard as part of the show's music track, Wishes also featured an appearance from Tinker Bell as she flew from the tallest spire of Cinderella Castle.

Good Night Kiss

After the official closing time of the park, after the Projection Show and Fireworks, guests who are still lingering in the Magic Kingdom can experience the Kiss Good Night.

Too few Walt Disney World fans know about The Kiss Goodnight. If you just thought, “what’s that?” you’re not alone. The Kiss Goodnight is a little over 2-minutes long, and it is the Magic Kingdom’s way of saying “goodbye” to guests at the end of a long day.

It usually play every 30 minutes after the park closes (meaning you could see it more than once in a single night), and starts with Cinderella Castle “twinkling” as the music from When You Wish upon a Star slowly builds.

The narrator then greets the last of the guests in the Magic Kingdom, saying:

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, on behalf of everyone here at the Magic Kingdom, we thank you for joining us today for a magic gathering of family, friends, fun, and fantasy. We hope your magical journey with us has created wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.
Walt Disney said that the Magic Kingdom is a world of imagination, hopes, and dreams. In this timeless land of enchantment, magic and make believe are reborn, and fairy tales come true. The Magic Kingdom is a place for the young and the young at heart. A special place where when you wish upon a star, your dreams can come true. Until we see you again, have a safe trip home. Thank you, and goodnight.”

We've come to the end of our tour of Cinderella's Castle. As you've seen there is a lot more to the Castle than being just an icon for the Magic Kingdom and Disney. As a parting below is a SLIDE SHOW featuring Cinderella's Castle, of course. Enjoy!

In our next Chapter 9, we're going to leave Main St. USA and the Castle and head off to Adventureland. We've spent a lot of time in these areas of the park, but hopefully you've had the opportunity to see that there is much, much more to Walt Disney World then just rides.
